Coast Guard Tuition Assistance (TA) is the Department of Homeland Security's program that pays for off-duty higher education for active-duty Coast Guard members. TA covers up to 100% of tuition and approved fees, subject to an annual fiscal-year cap (currently $4,500 per fiscal year) and a per-semester-hour cap (currently $250 per semester hour or $166.67 per quarter hour). This guide walks through eligibility, the application timeline, what TA covers and doesn't cover, and how to combine TA with the GI Bill, CGMA grants, and other education benefits.

Coast Guard TA at a glance
Annual cap: $4,500 per fiscal year (FY runs October 1 – September 30).
Per-credit cap: $250 per semester hour, $166.67 per quarter hour.
Tuition coverage: Up to 100% of tuition and approved fees, up to the caps above.
Eligible institutions: Accredited colleges and universities, vocational/technical schools, and approved certification programs.
Eligible programs: Associate, bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and approved certificate programs.
Service obligation: Two-year service obligation runs from the date of TA-funded course completion.
Who qualifies
Coast Guard TA is for active-duty Coast Guard members in good standing. Eligibility specifics:
Active-duty status throughout the period of the TA-funded course
Satisfactory performance evaluations
Not in a flight training, advanced training, or other DoD-funded education status that would create a duplicate funding situation
School is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education–recognized accreditor
Course is part of a recognized degree, certificate, or licensure plan
Coast Guard Reservists on extended active orders may be eligible for TA during the active period; consult your education services officer for specifics. Members who are already enrolled in DoD-funded advanced education typically cannot stack TA on top.
What TA covers — and what it doesn't
TA covers: Tuition charged by the school, approved required fees (lab fees, technology fees often qualify), and — for some programs — a books-and-materials portion in lieu of separate stipend.
TA does NOT cover: Room and board, transportation, parking, late fees, drop/withdrawal penalties, non-required fees, or courses taken without prior TA approval. Costs above the per-credit cap are the member's responsibility.
Failing the course or withdrawing: If you withdraw or fail a TA-funded course, you're typically required to reimburse the TA disbursement. Limited exceptions exist for involuntary withdrawal — coordinate with your education services officer immediately if the situation comes up.
How to apply for Coast Guard TA
Get your education services officer (ESO) involved. Every Coast Guard unit has an ESO or local education-services point of contact.
Select your school and program. Confirm accreditation and that the program is on the Coast Guard's eligible list.
Submit your TA request via the joint-service TA management portal — Coast Guard members currently use ArmyIgnitED or its successor.
Get the request approved before classes start. TA must be approved before the course start date. Submit at least 14 days early.
Complete the course. Earn a passing grade (typically C or better for undergraduate, B or better for graduate).
Provide grade documentation. Submit the final grade to your ESO so the TA closeout is complete.
Stacking TA with other education benefits
TA is the first dollar in most Coast Guard members' education funding plan; the GI Bill and other benefits stack on top:
TA + GI Bill (Top-Up): If your tuition exceeds the TA caps, the Post-9/11 GI Bill can ‘top up' the difference.
TA + CGMA Supplemental Education Grant (SEG): Up to $750/household per academic year. Helps cover books, fees, and gaps above TA caps.
TA + VR&E (Chapter 31): Veterans with service-connected disability ratings should consider VR&E alongside or instead of TA.
TA + state aid: Many states offer additional tuition assistance to reservists and veterans residing in-state.
The two-year service obligation
Coast Guard TA carries a service obligation: members must serve two years from the date of TA-funded course completion. The obligation runs concurrently with any other obligated service. Members who separate before completing the obligation may be required to repay TA funds disbursed, prorated to the un-served portion.
